Polo or t-shirt for the office?

The polo. A knitted polo with the collar flat and the top button open looks dressed enough for most offices, especially with knitted cotton pants or dark trousers. A t-shirt works at the office under a cardigan, an overshirt or a blazer, but rarely on its own. In summer, the short sleeve cotton polo is the warm weather answer to a shirt.

What do I wear under a knitted sweater, a polo or a t-shirt?

A t-shirt, and the Avenue T in white or light grey is the one we recommend. A crew neck disappears under the neckline of a crewneck or a half zip and keeps the wool off the skin. A polo collar under a sweater only works under a crewneck with a wide enough neck, where the collar shows, and that is a deliberate look rather than a base layer.

Is a knitted polo too warm for summer?

No, not in cotton. Knitted cotton is cooler than wool and more open than a woven shirt, so a short sleeve cotton polo is comfortable on a hot day in the city. The long sleeve cashmere polo is for spring and autumn evenings and for winter indoors. For the beach, the Avenue T in cotton with elastane is the lighter choice.

Can I tumble dry knitted cotton polos and t-shirts?

No. The tumble dryer is what shortens a cotton t-shirt and stretches a knitted collar out of shape. Wash both at 30 degrees with similar colours, pull them gently into shape and hang the t-shirt or lay the polo flat to dry. Cashmere polos are washed on a wool programme or by hand and always dried flat.

Polo or t-shirt?

Choose the t-shirt when it goes under something else: an overshirt, a cardigan, a hoodie or a blazer. A plain crew neck disappears under a layer and lets the knitwear do the talking. Choose the polo when it is the only thing you wear on top. The collar frames the face, and the buttons give you a way to dress it up or down. At a relaxed office, a knitted polo with knitted cotton pants passes where a t-shirt does not. On holiday, the t-shirt wins for the beach and the polo for the evening. If you are buying one of each, take the Avenue T in white and the polo in a darker colour, so you have a light and a dark option for the same pair of pants.
