When the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was introduced in 1963, it was developed for professional racing drivers. The chronograph made it possible to measure intervals of time, while the scale on the bezel could be used to calculate average speed over a known distance.
It is precisely this functional background that gives the watch its character. The pushers, the counters and the graduated bezel all have a job – and together they form an unusually strong visual identity.
How the scale works
The so-called tachymeter scale can seem complicated, but the principle is simple. Start the chronograph at the beginning of a measured kilometre and stop it at the end. If the distance takes 30 seconds, the scale shows an average speed of 120 kilometres per hour.
It is a concrete example of how the Daytona's design is anchored in timing and speed.
Paul Newman and a watch with a story of its own
Few people have become as closely associated with the Daytona as Paul Newman, the actor who was also a passionate racing driver.
His wife Joanne Woodward gave him a Daytona reference 6239 with a so-called exotic dial, a particular dial type that collectors later came to call the "Paul Newman". On the back she had the words "DRIVE CAREFULLY ME" engraved.
When Newman's own watch was sold at Phillips in October 2017, it reached around 17.8 million dollars including buyer's premium. The result reflects that particular watch's unique history and should be kept separate from the price of other Daytona watches.
A design that keeps evolving
The technology has changed over the years. In 2023 Rolex introduced calibre 4131 in the Daytona – an automatic chronograph movement with around 72 hours of power reserve. At the same time, the model kept its most recognisable features.
For us at Brown Avenue, part of the fascination lies there: in a form that can evolve and still keep its identity. The Daytona has a sporty expression that works just as naturally with a knitted polo as with a softly tailored blazer.
Motorsport explains how it looks. The people who have worn it give the story further depth.
