Behind the gates of Cap Estel – another side of the French Riviera

A private peninsula, a villa with a past and the Mediterranean as a constant companion. In Èze, between Nice and Monaco, lies Cap Estel – a place that captures the Riviera's gift for making the simple extraordinary.

It is easy to associate the French Riviera with grand gestures. Yachts in the harbour, busy beach clubs and evenings that carry on long after midnight. But along the same coast there are also addresses where seclusion is the very reason to come.

Cap Estel is one of them.

The five-star hotel sits on a private peninsula of around two hectares in Èze-Bord-de-Mer. The setting gives the place a character of its own: close to the Riviera's best-known destinations, with the sea and the gardens right at hand.

A story that begins before the summer Riviera

Long before the Côte d'Azur became synonymous with summer life, wealthy visitors came here for the mild winters.

According to the hotel's own history, the Irish writer and publisher Frank Harris, a friend of Oscar Wilde, was an early central figure here. Around 1900 the land began to be transformed into an exclusive retreat for American winter guests. Later, Countess Mery de la Canorgue shaped the gardens, where the great ficus trees became a recurring signature.

That says something interesting about the Riviera. Its pull was built long before today's beach clubs, around the light, the climate and the chance to slow down.

In the post-war years Cap Estel took on a more glamorous role. The hotel counts Greta Garbo, Anthony Quinn, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones among the names in its guest history. Behind the quiet setting there is also a chapter of film stars, music and long nights.

Cap Estel today – a hotel to slow down at

With 28 rooms and suites spread across four parts of the estate, Cap Estel has kept its intimate scale. There is a private beach, an infinity pool, an indoor pool and a spa – plenty of reasons to let the day revolve around the hotel. Above all it is the combination of seclusion, closeness to the sea and proximity to the Riviera's day trips that makes the address special.

For anyone who wants to experience the coast at a calmer pace, June or September are particularly appealing choices. You can usually enjoy the summer warmth before or after the most intense weeks of high season. Cap Estel suits a long weekend for two just as well as a few days of rest: a morning swim, a long lunch and an afternoon where the sea view is the whole programme.
